   Calif.gif (343 bytes) California entered the Union on September 9, 1850,  as state number 31.  By the 1900’s California had a bigger population than any other state in the U.S.  The name California was first given to Baha California by the explorer Hernan Cortes.
    In the Fall of 1993 more than a dozen brush fires swept through southern California burning more than 200,000 acres of property and destroying more than 1000 homes.  Not too long after that in January of 1994 an earthquake struck Los Angeles. As a result of the quake 57 people were killed, and three major overpasses collapsed.  The estimated damage cost was from 15 million to 30 million dollars.  
    Richard Nixon former president was born in Yorba Linda California.   California’s capitol is Sacramento.
