  alflag[1].gif (1209 bytes)    Alabama is a central Southeast state and is bordered to the North Tennessee, to the east by Georgia, to the south by Florida and the Gulf of Mexico, and to the west by Mississippi. The Chattahoochee River forms most of the boundary.  It is nicknamed the Heart of Dixie and entered the Union on December 14, 1819 as the 22nd state.
      Many people visit Horseshoe Bend National Military Park, which is the most popular park in Alabama.  There is a total of 24 parks in Alabama, including Cheaha State park.
       The first Europeans to explore Alabama were Spaniards and included Alonso Pineda in 1519, and Panfilo de Narvaez in 1528.  The French established the first permanent settlements at Fort Louis in 1702, Port Dauphin in 1702, and Mobile in 1711.
