Around the Track and Back

The Finish

At the last 20 meters or so of your sprint race, you have to dig down deep and find even more energy to make the final drive to the finish line and to be the one to break through that tape first. Grab a deep breath while you keep your lifting your knees high and pumping your arms. Thrust your chest up and out toward the tape and even when you think you've reached the tape, don't slow down! You have to run right through the tape or else you will unconsciously slow down!

Finish first!

That's basically all there is to sprinting. There are differences in how you run the three sprint races. For example, the 400 meter is the tougher of the three because you have to keep sprinting all the way around the track! The finish is much harder in the 400 meter. For the 400 meter you must relax a little more, shorten your stride and run on the balls of your feet instead of on the toes. In the 400 meter you can come down on your heels for a moment to rest your muscles. Passing should be down on the straightaways because the distance is shorter and your speed is the greatest there. Also, for for 400 meter and 200 meter dashes, since the outside lanes are longer than the inside lanes runners start staggered. You may have wondered why some runners seem to start ahead of others, well that's why. It's really more fair that way.
