      When you first get separators put in your teeth, before braces, sometimes it's hard to eat because it hurts to chew.  After you first get the braces put on it's pretty much the same feeling, but your gums and teeth hurt for three or four days.  This is when it's good to eat soft foods and drink shakes.  Every month you will have your braces you will have your braces tightened and you will need to eat soft foods for two or three days until it doesn't hurt to chew. 
      Some people need surgery on their jaw and they have their jaws wired closed for about two months.  They need to follow liquid diets to make sure they get good nutrition, calories and fiber. 
     Some of these recipes came from a book called Dinner Through a Straw by Patti E. Rann  This book has  lots of liquid meals for people recovering from jaw surgery.  It's a good idea to make shakes with your favorite ingredients.
Here are some foods that are fast to make:
Applesauce, pudding, custard, jello, canned fruit, breakfast drinks, ice cream, sorbet, yogurt, soft cheese, cottage cheese, mashed potatoes and eggs.

 
Curry Soup:

       Ingredients:
                        1 apple, 1 small onion, 4 cups of consommé, 1 cup cream, and curry powder.
       Instructions:
Blend the apple and onion in a blender until mashed. Combined consommé with apple-onion mash and simmer for 20 minutes.  Strain and add cream.  Season with curry powder for taste.  Pour and enjoy hot or chilled.

 

Pumpkin Pie: (makes 6-8 servings)

       Ingredients:
                       3 eggs, 1/2 cup of dark brown sugar, 1/2 cup of white sugar, 1 tablespoon of flour, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of pumpkin spice, 3 teaspoons of cinnamon, 1 1/2 cups of mashed pumpkin, 1 1/2 c ups of heated evaporated milk, and 1 pre formed pie shell.
      Instructions:
Mix flour, eggs, sugar, salt, pumpkin spice, cinnamon, mashed pumpkin and evaporated milk in a bowl.  Spoon the mix into the pie shell.  Bake in oven at 350 degrees for 50 to 60 minutes.

Hawaiian Lemonade:

       Ingredients:
                  1/2 6-oz. can frozen lemonade concentrate, 1/2 can of water, 1 6-oz. can unsweetened chilled pineapple juice, 1 6-oz. can apricot nectar, and 1 small bottle of ginger ale.
      Instructions:
Combine juices and water, chill.  Divide fruit juice mixture among 3 ice filled glasses.  Fill the remainder of the glass with ginger ale.  It makes 3 servings of 156 calories each. 

Deviled Eggs: (makes 6 servings)

       Ingredients:
                    3 shelled, hard-boiled eggs, 1 1/2 tablespoons of mayonnaise, 1 1/2 tablespoons of Chili sauce, 1/2 diced onion, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, 1/8 teaspoon of pepper, and 1/4 teaspoon of dry mustard. 
      Instructions:
Cut eggs in half lengthwise separating yolks from whites.  Blend egg yolks and other ingredients in a blender on medium speed until it's smooth.  Fill egg whites with blended mixture. Chill and serve. 

Cheese Omelet: 

      Ingredients:
                            4 eggs, 3/4 cup of water, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of pepper, 2 tablespoons of butter, 1/4 cup of grated cheese.
       Instructions:
Beat eggs slightly.  Add water, salt, pepper, and cheese.  Melt butter in small omelet pan.  Add eggs to the pan when the butter begins to sizzle.  Brown slightly and fold over. 

Baked Fish Fillets: (1-2 servings)

       Ingredients:
                 Salt, pepper, lemon juice, 1 filleted fish, and butter. 
      Instructions:
                 Place fish on a buttered baking pan.  Sprinkle with salt, pepper, and lemon juice.  Dot the top of the fish with the butter.  Bake at 400 degrees until the fish flakes with a fork.

 

 Russian Tea:

       Ingredients:
                      1 and  1/2 cups of sugar, 1 grated orange rind, 5 cups of water, 2 teaspoons of whole cloves, 1 stick of cinnamon, juice of 1 lemon, juice of 4 o ranges, 4 tea bags and 8 cups of boiling water.
       Instructions:
Boil the sugar, orange rind, cloves, cinnamon and water together for 5 minutes. Add tea bags to 8 cups of boiling water and steep at least 3 minutes.  Remove bags and add first mixture to the tea; add juices.  Remove cloves and cinnamon.  Serve warm at 60 calories per cup.

Tuna Pasta: (makes 3 servings)

       Ingredients:
                       1 box of Macaroni and Cheese, 1/2 cup of milk, 1 can of tuna, and 1 can of condensed
cream of mushroom soup.
      Instructions:
Prepare Macaroni and Cheese as per box directions.  Stir in mushroom soup, milk and tuna.  Heat to serving temperature. 
 
 

 

 Strawberry  Cream:

       Ingredients:
                       1 cup of whole milk, 2oz. fresh or frozen strawberries and one scoop of strawberry ice cream.
      Instructions:
Pour half of the milk; add strawberries.  Mix well.  Add remaining milk and ice cream to the blender and liquefy until all is creamy.  It makes 1 serving of 405 calories. 

Chili Con Carne: (makes 6 servings)

       Ingredients:
                       1 pound of ground beef, 1 onion finely diced, 1 can of red kidney beans, 2 cups of stewed tomatoes, 1 tablespoon of chili powder, salt, and paprika.
      Instructions:
Add the onion, ground beef, garlic, kidney beans, tomatoes, and chili powder to a heated frying pan.  Simmer one hour, stirring occasionally.  Remove the skillet from the heat and allow eggs to cook in water for five minutes.  Season to taste with salt, pepper and paprika.
 

Spaghetti:

     Ingredients:
                       1 8 ounce package of spaghetti, and 1 jar of sauce.  You choose!
     Instructions:
Over cook spaghetti in boiling salted water to make it extra tender.  Heat the sauce.  Drain the spaghetti and cover it with sauce.

Meat loaf :

       Ingredients:
                      One cup of bread crumbs, one cup of tomato sauce or juice, one pound of ground beef, one egg well beaten, 1/4 cup of catsup, one tablespoon of Worchester Sauce, 3 grated carrots (optional) one package of dry onion soup mix, 1/2 teaspoon pepper. 
    Instructions:
 Place bread crumbs in mixing bowl, pour tomato juice over crumbs and let stand until softened.  Add remaining ingredients and mix well.  Shape into loaf in a casserole dish and bake one hour at 325 degrees. 

Milkshake:

     Two scoops of ice cream or frozen yogurt combine with one cup of milk, one teaspoon of sugar and one teaspoon of flavoring  liquefied in a blender is delicious and provides the option of variety.    Other shake combinations may include:  bananas, strawberry topping, chocolate syrup and flavoring such as coconut, butternut, almond, etc.

Over cook spaghetti in boiling salted water to make it extra tender.  Heat the sauce.  Drain the spaghetti and cover it with sauce.
