Dr. Mizrahi gave us a tour of his office.  He showed us plaster models of his patients' teeth and the many tools he uses to put on and adjust braces.  The picture on the right shows Dr. Mizrahi's desk and X-ray machine.  The X-rays show the position of the adult teeth before they come in.  Then a plan to put on braces in the next few years can be made. On the left is a picture of Madeline posing as a patient and Dr. Mizrahi is using a tool to examine her bite.  Dr. Mizrahi and his assistant are wearing gloves to make sure that every procedure is clean and safe.  On the right is a picture of metal tools that look like pliers to adjust different wires.

Dr. Mizrahi's assistant showed us the retainer she wears all day to keep her teeth just right.  On the right is a picture of some retainers and a plaster model of a patient's teeth.  It's fun to see a whole wall of models and to see how different everybody's teeth look.

We couldn't stay long because kids, their parents and teenagers were starting to arrive for their monthly adjustments.  It seemed like brothers and sisters were getting braces at the same time.  Some of the teenagers came on their own after school.  The adjustments don't take long.  We really appreciated the tour.

Dr. Mizrahi said that "corrective orthodontic work is important for health reasons, not merely cosmetic ones.  Orthodontic treatment might be necessary prior to prosthetic treatment or in conjunction with periodontal treatment.  This can apply to  patients with a skeletal deformity where it might prove necessary to combine orthodontic and surgical treatment for the best possible outcome."

IN OTHER WORDS:

Kids and Adults may need braces to keep teeth and gums healthy.  Prosthetic treatment refers to replacing missing bone or teeth.  Periodontal treatment is about treating gums that hold the teeth so they can be kept in good condition.  Putting teeth in the right position is important if you are going to keep your gums healthy or if you need to replace missing teeth.  If the jaw holding the teeth is not shaped the right way to hold the teeth the way they should, then surgery and braces might be necessary.  First the braces go on the teeth and move them into a certain position.  Then the patient has an operation to correct the shape of the jaw while the teeth stay in their new place
