What is a TEMPERATE
rainforest?

- There are temperate ones on
the Pacific coast from Oregon to Alaska. They are the largest ones
- 1200 miles! When the first settlers arrived there they found
more than a million acres of it ... what's left? About 3%! Think
about that...
- On the southeast coast of
Chile, we find the next largest area.
- There are smaller strips in
southern Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Norway and
Japan.
- Trees here also tend to
flare out at the base.
- Plants grow
larger.
- Plant & animal life is
very diverse... that's means there are many different
types.
- They get about 100 inches
of rain a year. If they are on the coast, a fog often hangs over
the area.
- They are cooler in
temperature.
- The same plants and animals
do NOT exist in temperate rainforests as in the tropical
ones, so don't go looking for macaws in Oregon
forests!
