This is a page where I have posted responses I've gotten from a survey I sent out in the beginning of the project. The survey consisted of several questions about the size
of the team,
what they thought about Alaskan Swimming, and their practice schedule. The only answer I have posted out of those questions on this page is what they think about Alaskan
swimming. The other questions have been summarized on the practice chart of my main page. Here are their responses.
"The Distances between teams is vast. Some teams must travel very far to compete" Coach Lorene Llyn (Wasilla Waves)
"We have some very fine athletes in swimming & myself being a coach from Florida. In the past I didn't even know swimming existed up here. I feel
Alaska is kind of a solitude state with great talent" Coach Lawrence (Ketchikan Killer Whales)
"The opportunity for unique & exciting travel" Coach O'Connell (Viking Swim Club)
"Alaska swimming covers an incredible amount of territory. Teams must do a significant amount of fund rasing in order to travel to meets
around the state. There are many places in Alaska where air travel is the only option (and a rather expensive one)." Coach Lynn Seitz (Alaska Pacific Swim Club)
"Distance and travel costs for in state meets. Lack of high level competition in state requires frequent & expensive travel to out of state meets. Lack of committment to year
around training." Coach Rick Powers (Northern Lights Swim Club)
"I coached for eight years in California prior to Coaching in Alaska. Swimming in Alaska is a "Warm Winter Sport". Unlike in California where kids swim in racing, wet winter
conditions. Alaska swimmers are (I believe) more supportive of fellow Alaskan Swimmers-We stick together." Coach Maurer (South Central Sea Serpents)
"Alaska swimming's most unique aspect involves travel to & from swim meets. Living in South East Alaska we do not have road access to other towns with swim clubs making
every road trip to swim meets an adventure." Coach Brand (Craig Aquatic Center Waverunners Swim Club)
"The amount of travel that Alaska swimmers do-in state & out of state-& the dedication it demands to do so." Coach VanDriessche (Seward Tsunami Swim Club)
"Friendship & cooperation of Coaches, Expensive - Swimmers take jet to some meets, in South East Alaska they sometimes travel on the ferry to meets." Coach Barkman
(Soldotna Silver Salmon Swim Team)
"Due to oil money in the 80's, many pools available." Coach Thompson (Peninsula Piranhas Swim Team)
