Early one fall, Artemis remembered a case that
took place when soccer season was starting. That fall, Mr. Carnes
and Mr. Reese were putting together a soccer team for the second year in
a row. Most of the players were the same as last year's team: Matt,
Jerry, Deron, Tom, Lee, and Evan. Four new boys came. They
were Chris, Marc, Anthony, and Kyle. The teams first game of the
season was scheduled for the next day. The Artemises, a team name
they had selected because of their trusty mascot, Artemis the dog, were
ready to receive their new positions and begin the drill. After an afternoon
of dribbling, passing, and scoring they felt sure that they were ready
for tomorrow's game. Chris, Marc, Anthony, and Kyle had to leave
practice early because they had promised Mr. Crock that they would do some
work at his junkyard. Coach Carnes felt sure that they were ready
for the big game and informed them to meet at the Northside soccer field
at 4:00 dressed and ready for a win.
On Saturday at 4:00p.m. sharp, the soccer game was
to begin. When they got to the soccer field they realized that
Chris, Marc, Anthony, and Kyle were missing! Well of course, Artemis
realized it before anyone else had, and was already on the trail to find
them. When Artemis didn't find anything, she came back. "Maybe
they just aren't coming", she thought. When their parents showed
up to watch them play, Artemis knew she had a mystery to solve. The
team's parents quickly called the police.
It was now up to Artermis to find some clues to
help find her missing teammates. Could there be some red herrings
to throw her off the track? Once again she returned to the scene
to pick up their scent. Where would these boys be? Off to the
mall! No luck. What about the work they were doing at the junkyard?
Yes, that must be it. So, off she went and the scent was getting
stronger. She followed her nose to the corner of the junkyard and
there to her surprise were her four teammates locked up with no key to
get them out. Artemis ran as fast as her four feet would carry her.
Artemis, soon returned with Coach Carnes, Coach
Reese, the team, and their parents. Artemis to the rescue!
They were relieved that the boys were okay. The boys had worked so
long that they didn't realize that they had been locked in the junkyard.
Now, they could play the game!
Artemis received an award, a special collar that
said, "ARTEMIS, the DETECTIVE DOG"!
And to this day, when there's a mystery, Artemis
is on the case.
