A Virginian named Peter Jefferson had a plantation. Little did he know he would give rise to the "Father of Democracy." In April of 1743 the first son of Peter and his wife Jane was born. They named him Thomas Jefferson. He started school when he was five. Thomas's father owned the school. Thomas loved to go hunting in the mountains with his friends. Thomas learned to ride horses as a boy. He liked to ride on the plantation. When Tom was fourteen, his father died.

Tom stayed in school because he wanted to learn many more things. Throughout his life he enjoyed learning. At seventeen, Thomas was ready to go to college.
