The Washington Monument

The Washington monument is 555 feet tall and is made out of marble. In 1847 the government collected $70,000 from the people to continue the building. On July 4, 1848 the corner stone was laid.
When the goverment could not afford the creation of the monument any more, they collected one dollar in fees from everyone in Maryland. The structure was about 153 feet when building stopped. The building was delayed until 1880. When the monument was done Washington had already died and buried at Mount Vernon. This is a symbol of democracy because it was made in memory of George Washington.
