Limestone

Tennessee's offical rock was selected on February 28, 1979. A group of sixth grade students, who had been studying state symbols in their history class, lobbied for limestone to become the state rock. Limestone was chosen because it is a valuable building material and is found almost everywhere in Tennessee. We are surrounded by it: we drive on it, we use many products made with limestone, and we eat food which limestone helps to grow.
