King- The King was the supreme ruler of thein the medieval world. The King's word was law. His subjects owed theirlivelihood and their allegiance to him. So that is why they protect himin battle.
Knight - The Knight was the best soldierin medieval times. The Knight often rode a horse, and that is why he canjump over other chess pieces on the board. The Knight was most commonlyknown for carrying a sword and a shield.
Pawn- The Pawn was the footsoldier in medievaltimes and was the most common. The Pawn had few rights and served the King.Pawns were often sacrificed for the lives of more important people suchas the King, Queen, Bishop, Rook, or Knight.That was because he was of theleast importance.
Queen - The medieval Queen had greatpower over the kingdom. She was sometimes even a ruler if no King was present,and just like on the chess board she stood next to the King. The Queen wasalso the mother of the Prince or Princess.
Rook - Also known as the castle. Nobles wouldoften live inside the castle in time of war. Men with crossbows would goon top of the castle and shoot arrows at the enemy below.
