VOCABULARY

WHAT IS A VOLCANO?

A volcano is an opening in the earth's crust through which molten lava, ash, and gases are ejected.

Why does a volcano erupt?

A volcano will erupt most of the time because there is an earth quake or a shaking of the ground. Sometimes the lava, rocks, or other materials of the volcano blow the top off the mountain, but not all the time because some of the time the volcano is not strong enough.

Where are volcanoes?

Almost all active volcanoes sit within an area like a belt called " The Ring Of Fire " which goes around the Pacific Ocean and its shore lands.

DIFFERENT KINDS OF VOLCANOES

Active volcanoes

When volcanoes are active they are awesome and they erupt hot magma.  When the magma comes out of the volcano, is called lava. When some volcanes are active they erupt every day so the volcano would never be dormant or extinct. When some volcanoes erupt they don’t erupt enough lava or other materials to make people leave the area. When volcanoes are active they are usually violent but many active volcanoes live under the ocean, and when a volcano lives under the ocean it never has as much chance for us to see it be violent.

Dormant volcanoes

A volcano that is dormant is sleeping, and it is alive but not growing. If a volcano was dormant and started to erupt again,  it would turn from being dormant to being active.

Extinct volcanoes

When a volcano is extinct it no longer erupts. So when a volcano is extinct that basically means that the volcano turned from being a volcano into a mountain again. Sometimes when a volcano is dormant people may think it is extinct, but the volcano could still erupt.

VOLCANOES THAT HAVE RECENTLY ERUPTED

Most active volcanoes are in the Ring of Fire in that circles the Pacific ocean.
