Most of the Asians in Hoke County have come here as a part of the army which is located at Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base. These military bases are located next to Hoke County. In the 1990 Census, the numbers indicated that there were 18 Filipinos, 9 Korean, and 12 other Asians in Hoke County. Asian students have increased 6.3 percent since then. In Hoke County, the largest group to perform at or above grade level on statewide tests were Asian females.
Asians bring along their customs and culture to our community. Many of the Asian customs are like ours in Hoke County. Some of the customs are different and very interesting. For example, Asians have a custom of having an opera in Beijing style. Asians also have parades and festivals. One parade they have is on June 1st, called Children's Day.
Today in Hoke County, schools are providing more tutoring to immigrants, and churches are ministering to their spiritual needs. Most Asians live in a community together and have an effect on that community. Asians influence government, schools and other community organizations to change the way they do business. Asians help to complete our community in many ways.
