Restless Europe

There are volcanoes in Europe, mostly in Italy and Greece. But most of volcanoes are at the island Iceland. There is a volcano in Iceland called Grimsvotn that erupted under a glacier. After a long time of erupting the glacier was flooding the crater. Another volcano in Iceland is called Hekla, which is one of the island's most active. The most recent eruption was in 1991. Etna of Italy is one of the largest continental volcanoes. The base of this volcano is almost 36 x 24 miles (60 x 40 km) and the height is 10991 ft (3350 m). Etna is also one of the best know volcanoes in the whole world. Most of the rocks that are formed in an eruption of Etna are called andesite. Most of the outside covering is made up of lava from the past times of the eruptions. The most known volcano in the world is called Vesuvious. This volcano destroyed most of Pompeii and Stabiae. The last eruption that this volcano ever made was in1944. Earthquake happenings have occurred also. In 1908 Messina of Italy struck with the volume of 7.5, killing more than 83000 people. In 1915 Avezzano of Italy struck with the volume of 7.5 also, more than 30000 were killed.
