| Antarctica has only five volcanoes on it. One is
called Mount Erebus. It is the tallest one, which stands 12,540 feet high
(3,822 meters). In 1984 Mount Erebus' eruption was more than visitors expected.
The eruptions threw "bombs" of heated rock 2,000 feet (610 meters) high above
the rim of the crater, as well as mushroom-cloud plumes and black ash that
covered the mountain's North West slopes. The Earth's largest earthquake of the year occurred in Antarctica in March, 1998. It had a magnitude of 8.1. |
