History

National Cherry Festival - Traverse City is the "Cherry Capital of the World" and celebrates the harvesting of the cherries with a festival that lasts for eight days with parades, an air show, fireworks and Midway rides.

Tall Ship Malabar and Manitou - take a two hour ride or a 3-day family sail onboard a two-masted, topsail schooner. The Malabar is a 46-passenger ship that sails Grand Traverse Bay. The Manitou is a 24-passenger bed and breakfast ship that sails for a 3-day trip long northern Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. Call 14 days in advance - 616-941-2000.

Amon Orchard Tours - at this family-run cherry orchard you can take a trolley ride around the orchard and learn about cherry history and how cherries are grown and sold. Also you can feed the animals at the petting zoo, sample delicious cherry recipes and pick your own cherries during harvest time. During fall they have pumpkins and you can press your own cider. The orchard is located at 8066 North US-31, Traverse City. 616-938-9160.

Clinch Park Zoo - this small zoo has Michigan's animals and an aquarium with Michigan's fish. Take a ride around the zoo and park in a steam train Memorial Day through Labor Day. Located on Grandview Parkway in Traverse City.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore - Michigan's most famous sand dune is fun to walk up and feel your toes sink into the warm sand. The dunes reach up over 400 feet above Lake Michigan and can be a tough climb. Come prepared with water and sun protection. Visit the many beaches in the area. The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in about one hour west of Traverse City.

Denoss Museum - has one of the largest displays of Eskimo art in the Inuit Gallery. The Discovery Gallery is a hands-on room for children with interactive videos. The museum is part of Northwestern Michigan's College on College Drive and Munson Avenue in Traverse City. Open 7 days. 616-922-1055
