History

River Raisin Battlefield Visitor's Center - one of the major battles in the War of 1812 occured on the River Raisin between what is today Dixie Highway and Detroit Street. 250 Americans were killed, the wounded were attacked by Indians the next day and 60 more people were killed. This museum has exhibits of the battle and a fiber optic map program is projected onto a wall to provide a visual summary of the fighting. Open daily, May15 thru Labor Day, and weekends, September thru April. 1402 East Elm Street, Monroe. 313-243-7136.

Sterling State Park - western lake Erie's only park with camping and swimming.

Navarre-Anderson Trading Post and Country Store Museum - a trading post built by fur trader Francois Navarre in1789, this building has been restored and is the oldest house in Michigan. The country store is typical of those from the 1900's.

Monroe County Historical Museum - this museum has lots of General George Custer items, the most famous person associated with Monroe. It also shows the history of Monroe county from the early Woodland Indians thru the Vietnam War
