Michigan
State University - The university was founded in 1855 and the
original program of study was farm science. It has grown from
three buildings in a field of stumps near the Red Cedar River to
an educational complex with one of the largest enrollments in the
country. It now has over 200 programs of study. The MSU Spartans
are a member of the Big Ten Conference.
Michigan State has great museums and tours for children to see
including the Botany Green House and Butterfly
House, the MSU Museum - with full
dinosaur skeletons, the Dairy Store, Farm
Tours, the Kresge Art Museum and the Abrams
Planetarium.
Michigan State Capitol - tour the State Capitol building. The building of the Capitol Building took 6 years and it was designed by Elijah E. Myers. The building was first dedicated to the citizens of Michigan in 1879 and rededicated in November of 1992. It is located at the intersection of Capitol and Michigan Ave. Tours are Mon.- Fri. 9a.m. to 4p.m., Sat. 10a.m. - 4p.m. and closed on Sunday. For more information call 1-517-373-2300.
Potter Park Zoo - Here are a variety of over 400 animals as well as activities. Recently they added the funny meerkats, who are active, curious and fun to watch! Children can get into the zoo for only $1 and enjoy pony and camel rides in the summer. The park entrance is at 1301 S. Pennsylvania in Lansing four blocks south of I-496. It is open 365 days a year. Turner-Dodge House - originally built in 1853, it was enlarged in1903. You can tour this three-story Greek revival home Monday-Friday but you must call ahead for reservations at least 2 weeks in advance. Children's tours get the children involved in old-fashioned dances, games and chores. In the summer there are craft workshops, scout troop badge workshops and history camp. Call 517-483-7660.

Impression 5 Science
Center - is a hands-on science museum that has something for
everyone! You can skip from place to place and play, touch, build
and experiment. Open Monday - Saturday 10a.m. -5p.m. and Sundays
12 noon - 5p.m.. Located on 200 Museum Drive, Lansing.
Michigan Historical Museum and Michigan Library - this impressive Michigan museum tells of the state's history from prehistoric time to the twentieth century. Walk through a copper mine, play around in a Motown recording booth and follow five children who grew up in different Michigan homes from 1880-1895. There is much more to enjoy this museum. Open 7 days a week. Call 517-373-2353 for group tours.
Michigan's Women's Historical Center and Hall of Fame - recognizes the lives, history and achievements of Michigan women from Sojourner Truth to former First Lady Betty Ford. Located at 213 W. Main St., Lansing. It is open Wed.-Sun., September- June. The rest of the year it is open Wed.-Fri.and Sunday. Call 517-484-1880.
R.E. Olds Transportation Museum - if you like cars, this is the museum for you! See the 1897 first production Oldsmobile and then notice how the cars change over the years from clunky to sleek. Over 50 Oldsmobiles and other less-known cars built in Lansing. The gift shop has many Olds related items including model car kits, car posters and pictures. Open 7 days and located at 240 Museum Drive, Lansing. 517-372-0422.
