History

Kalamazoo Nature Center - walk along a nature trail through the woods, see live animals, try out the hands-on exhibits and visit the 1858 DeLano Homestead. This is a living pioneer farm where you can watch demonstrations of pioneer crafts on special weekends. Open 7 days year-round. 700 Westnedge Ave., Kalamazoo. 616-381-1574.

Train Barn - this large barn has two floors. On the first floor is a hobby shop displaying model trains from the turn-of-the- century to present day. The top floor is filled with Lionel train layouts. The top floor is open only on Saturdays from 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m.. The main floor is open 1-7 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday. 10234 East Shore Drive, Kalamazoo. 616-327-4016.

Gilmore Classic Car Museum - over 140 antique automobiles shown in large red barns. The history and development of the automobile industry is traced. Open daily 10 a.m. -5 p.m., May -October. 6865 Hickory Road, Hickory Corners. 616-671-5089.

Kalamazoo Aviation History Museum - World War II aircraft and airplane exhibits - Some of which you can play inside. Call for group tours: 616-382-6555. 3101 East Milham Rd., Kalamazoo.

Kalamazoo Institute of Arts - there are no permanent displays but this small art gallery has changing exhibits and nice outdoor sculpture. 314 South Park Street, Kalamazoo. Open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. and 1-5p.m. Sundays, September thru May .

Kalamazoo Valley Museum and Universe Theatre Planetarium - a mix of science, technology, history, and culture. The planetarium is great, taking you on imaginary trips to galaxies and black holes. Found at 230 North Rose Street, Kalamazoo, on the Arcadian Commons Campus of Kalamazoo Valley Community College.Open 7 days. 616-373-7990.
