DISEASES & MICE

Mice have been blamed for spreading lots of diseases. In May of 1992 in New Mexico, some people just suddenly couldn’t breathe and died because of a strange, new disease. They had no idea why. More and more people died, and just when you're about to run out of breath, even more!

Well, to be absolutely truthful, I think only about 25 people died. But still, nobody knew why. Mostly Navajos died. Most everybody thought that they were spreading it. When a man that worked at the hospital got sick, everybody got scared and thought that it was contagious. Scientists finally figured out that it was mice causing the disease and made tests on the mice. They found out that it was the deer mouse. "It is hard to believe that such an adorable little animal can cause so much trouble," says biologist Robert Parmenter, at the University of New Mexico. Deer mice were found to carry hantavirus.
