The Stomach |
| The esophagus passes through the diaphragm and empties into the stomach. This is where all the food taken in by the mouth is processed into raw nutriens. The stomach is a hollow, muscular organ located in the middle of the abdomem. As food enters the stomach the muscular walls stretch. When the stomach stretches so much then you dont feel hungry anymore. The walls of the stomach come into contact with each other, and this helps to mix the food with the acids in the stomach. The acids in the stomach are strong enough to kill some bacteria in the food, yet they usually dont cause the stomach itself to be ate up. These acids help to digest the food and turn it into nutrients that can be used by the body. The food leaves the stomach as a semi liquid material called chyme. The chyme goes into the small intestine through a one way valve and begins its long journey through the intestines. |
