What's Hot

According to Boyle Road Elementary School

SPORTS

Football - because John Elway announced he will play another season.

Basketball - because Tim Duncan and Keith Van Horn are candidates for the Rookie of the Year.

Ice Hockey - because Wayne Gretzky is going to play another year.

Baseball - because we expect more offense in and expansion season. See the March 29th New York Times article on this subject.

What's Not

Sports

Lacrosse - Still does not have the following.

Figure skating - Winter activity only.

Swimming - Not of interest to anyone.

Gymnastics - Too hard to learn.

Exercises

To keep at a healthy weight:

Walk or run about 1 mile a day at least 4 days a week.

Eat fruits and vegetables about 5 servings a day.

Limit fatty foods (such as, red meats, chicken and poultry skins) and greasy foods.

Drink plenty of fluids (juice and water).

Always walk upstairs rather then taking an elevator.

Avoid late night snacks.

To help build endurance for athletic activity:

Warm-up exercises ( stretch muscles slowly without bouncing, stretch arms, legs and back).

Jog slowly for 1 mile, wind sprints of twenty yards and walk back. Repeat 6 times.

Rest body for a couple of minutes then do sets of wind sprints of 40, 60, and 100 yards. Repeat 6 times resting 2 minutes in between.

These exercise tips will help build endurance but done at a gradual pace until optimum of a set of six is reached!

Extra exercises that save fuel!

Instead of a parent driving to friend's houses try walking, biking or roller skating.

Instead of a parent driving you to the store for little things (candy, soda, etc.)walk, ride a bike or roller blade.

Instead of the bus bringing you to school you can walk, bike or roller skate.

Safety tip - always try to do the above in a safe environment. Take a friend along with you.

All these tips should first be evaluated by a parent for safety precautions.

2) Take a running start and pull the ball over your head.

3) As you throw the ball drag your opposite foot.

Receiving and Trapping

1) To trap the ball with the inside of your foot you must lift your foot slightly off the ground.

2)As the ball approaches at the moment of impact move your foot backwards slightly (2-3 inches).

1) To trap the ball with your chest lean into the ball "give" with it.

2) Then let it drop to your feet.

Passing and Shooting

1) Use your heel to pass backwards.

2) To pass with your instep cushion your foot slightly.

3) Then as you come to the ball make an accurate pass a little in front of your teammate.

There also is a pass called a give "N" go.You simply pass and move to open space.

1) When shooting with your laces ,point toe down and drive the ball forward.

2)Make sure your foot gets under the ball and push your body into it.

3) You also must follow through in a game.

Goal Keeping Skills

Catching the ball

2) Then pull ball to your chest.

Punting

1) When punting hold the ball with both hands nice and tight extended downward.

2) As the kicking leg swings forward release the ball in front of your kicking leg.

3) your head should be kept down after the kick and remember to always follow through.

The high and low shot

1) When there is a high shot toward you jump up protecting yourself with your leg by simply pulling it up to your chest.

2) Then pull the ball to your chest and remember to always yell keeper.

1) When there is a low ball coming toward you bend in a kneeling position and pull the ball to your chest.

Sport Nightmares

Problem:Have you ever been picked last when you are choosing teams to play soccer, basketball, etc.?

Solution:Don't be upset just play the game and practice to become a better athlete. Remember practice makes perfect.

Problem:Have you ever been been picked first and lose the game for your team?

Solution:You shouldn't blame yourself we've been in that position tons of times. Remember it's only a game.

Problem:Have you ever been blamed for losing a game and kids are yelling at you?

Solution:Don't worry it probably wasn't even your fault. If the kids yelll at you it is best just to ignore them.

Sport's Joke of The Month

What is chocolate and in the Hall of Fame?

Hint: It involves baseball.

Amazing Sport Awards

Worst Dressed: Denver Broncos

In their new uniforms they look weird in their curvy stripes or whatever they are. When the players line up and crouch down, they look like a row of commas.

Quickest leap to the Hall of Fame: Mario Lemieux

He retired from the Pittsburgh Penguins just last season. The NHL waived its usual 3 year waiting time for entry into the hall.

Biggest Crybaby: Keyshawn Johnson

He complained about his team, his coach, his playing time, - and even wrote a book to get a bigger audience for his whining.

Funniest Blooper: Deion Sanders, Cincinnati Reds

When the left fielder attempted to catch a fly ball in one game, it bopped him right on the noggin. Now that's using your head.

Most Painful Injury: Jerry Rice

When Rice got hurt in the first game of the season, football lost its greatest star for the whole year.
