How are Earthquakes caused?
Most earthquakes occur on faults that already exist.
An earthquake occurs when too much stress builds up.
This may happen over a period of many years or decades.
The fault makes sound waves in the air which hits rocks
and causes the ground to shake. After a major earthquake occurs,
many little earthquakes called aftershocks can last for
seconds, minutes or even hours.
