The ground shook with a tremendous force on the morning of Sunday, May 18, 1980. All the pressure and gas could no longer stay inside Mt. St. Helen's massive form. Ash, smoke, and gases erupted from the throat of the mountain. But instead of going straight up into the sky like scientists predicted, the volcanic blast headed sideways, towards the north.
