WHAT IS AN UNDERWATER VOLCANO?

An underwater volcano is just a magma chamber beneath the surface of the water. When the volcano erupts, the cold water cools the lava quickly to rock. The cooled lava builds up to form a rock and when it breaks the surface, it forms an island.

SCIENTISTS SAY UNDERWATER VOLCANO MAY REVEAL NEW ORGANISMS

The underwater volcano, Axial Seamount, is located east off Seattle 4,000 feet beneath the surface. Scientists say lava flowing out from Axial Seamount carries microbes that thrive beneath the ocean floor.

WHY IS THIS SO IMPORTANT TO STUDY?

These microbes are important to research because some scientists say that this could the source of life on this planet. These microbes live in high temeratures and feed off of the bacteria and viruses in the volcanic rock. Research companies hope these microbes will help produce new products.
