Journal Page

Magellan took out his little journal and started writing:

Dear Journal,

Today has been a very strange day for me. It turns out that I have landed on some weird planet that is very hot. I feel like I have lost a couple pounds (which is a relief!) too. When I look at the sun I see that it is a lot larger than looking at it from Earth. This must mean Venus is closer to the sun than earth. (Even so, Magellan did not know that Venus's orbit is 140 days quicker than Earth's).

The day went on and on. He must've eaten about 500 meals of sand, acid water and other yummy treats before the day ended. At the end of the day he celebrated his birthday.

This is true because...
Earth Venus
Day 24 hrs. 243 Earth Days
Years 365.26 days 225 Earth days
Avg. Distance from Sun 93 million miles 67 million miles

If this voyage was a real one Magellan wouldn't have lasted on Venus for 10 seconds. Venus's temperatures range up to 880 degrees F. Also, the atmosphere of Venus consists of almost all carbon dioxide and 0% oxygen. If Magellan could magically survive the great heat and carbon dioxide, then he'd be smashed from an air pressure 90 times greater than Earth's! This almost crushes our hopes of actually visiting Venus.

Magellan's total trip took 0.3 Venus days and 80 Earth days. Magellan finally was freed from the strange Venusians and was banished back to Earth.
