History

Basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith a teacher at the YMCA International training school in Massachusetts. Dr. Naismith wanted to relive the boredom of his students during winter physical education classes. He had 2 fruit baskets nailed to both ends of a gym, found a soccer ball and set out some rules witch are some of the basic rules today. Dr. Naismith was born in Canada in 1861, and lived long enough to see the game he invented for the first time. The first game was played in a basement gymnasium. There was a stepladder to retrieve the ball from the fruit basket.
