Toys in
Space
We watched
a video that was made by NASA from the "Liftoff to
Learning " series. We got our information about toys
on Earth by observing them. We got our information about
toys in space from the video.
The thing
hat makes toys behave differently in space is because in
space there is not as much gravity as on Earth. in space
there is micro-gravity. The toys float like they don't
weigh anything. Like pool ball floats slower than a
racquet ball. So we found out that if a toy has less mass
it floats faster than a toy with more mass.
| TYPE OF TOY |
How it acts on Earth |
How it acts in space |
| WIND UP TOY |
It flips over and over on a table top |
It flips high in the air and to slow it down
the astronaut taped it to a book and it still
flipped high in the air but more slowly |
| THE FLAPPING BIRD |
On Earth when the wings flap it flies
straight. And falls if the wings don't flap |
It goes in circles around the wings if the
wings flap and soars up if the wings are still |
| GYROSCOPE |
When it is spinning if you knock it, it will
wobble and go off its plane of spin |
If you hit it while spinning it will st
stable on its axis. If the axis is steady the
power from the spin is controlled. |
| BALL IN A CUP |
To toss the ball up into the cup you make the
cup raise to meet the ball and it stays in the
cup |
In space, if you push the cup toward the ball
the ball floats away and won't stay in the cup |
