1. Exciting the Atoms In a laser, energy is first stored in stuff called lasing medium. This stuff may be a solid, liquid or gas. The energy excites atoms in the stuff, making them bounce all around. One excited atom then suddenly releases a light ray. In a gas laser, shown here, electrons in an electric current excite the gas atoms, that is what the author tells us.

2.Light Builds Up : When excited atoms bump they give off light rays. Lots of

excited atoms hit and more light is made. Mirrors make it seem like even more light.

3. The Laser Fores All the light rays start to move together, then they can slip out past the mirror. The light energy that goes out is laser light.

4. Gas Laser: Produces a steady stream of laser light.

LASER

On Wednesday March 17,1998 2 Adults and 7 students went to BlockBuster Golf and Games to play and learn a little about how some of the stuff they have there that interacts with science. The first thing that we didi that interact edwith science is Laser Tag. Laser Tag is a game that you have to hit the other team"s gun. There were these sentries in the roof where you hit them you got more points. Well a tour was given to us to show us where every thing is. The teams were picked it was 4 on 4 we, picked our gums, we activated our gun. Once your guns were activated you were ready, Let the games began. We all came in shotoing. The game was fun but in the end the Orange team won. The winnner from the orange Team was one of the Adult swhich was our teacher Mrs.Shasek. She won with 640 points.

At the time, we had no idea how the laser guns worked. In a book called THE WAY THINGS WORK by David MacCauley we found out. A laser produces a narrow beam of very bright light, either firing brief pulses of light or forming a continuous beam. Laser standsfor Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. A laser beam may either be of visible light, or of invisible infra-red ray.

Look at the picture from the book. We scanned it in and cropped it to fit on this page.

When we played laser tag we had to energize the gun first. The laser light shot out of the gun - now we know that was excited atoms.
