This page is a guide for teachers who would like to provide students the opportunity to become naturalists and do service while they are learning. We live near a wetland preserve in South Florida. It has 39 species of endangered animals and 54 species of endangered plants. No matter where you live on this earth, man is ruining habitats in some way. If we are to make the Earth safe for living things in the future, children must care.
When we did service at West Lake Park, most of us had never been to a wetland and all we cared about were the large marine mammals. There is much more to a habitat and we wouldn't know it if we didn't get cold, wet, muddy, and work with naturalists out in the field.
We hope you can use our site and then make a service learning project that is customized to your area. If you live in the US, you can go to the National Fish and Wildlife site and find a NEED in your area. They also have a way for kids to become partners in protecting wildlife. You can get there by Clicking HERE. Click BACK to return to this site. That is the first step in service learning. We got a grant that was written by the Hollywood Rotary Club. Our money for buses and field supplies, art supplies and film came from the Florida Serve and Learn grant. You can find out how to get Learn and Serve money by clicking HERE, but please click BACK and return to our site for more good stuff.
