The Teacher Spot

We studied a book by Dr. Eileen Cotton called THE ONLINE CLASSROOM. The purpose of this page is to let you help your students develop a better understanding of the characteristics, habitats, and relations of things in wetlands. Your students will use our site and its links to learn about ecosystems, especially wetlands. We will give you a guide for your students to create a database of what they learn.

You can show students pictures of wetlands or take them out to a wetland. You can use the space in the chart under the KWL words to fill in things the kids discuss. You can out one large chart on a flip chart and make a smaller chart for each group of students to have. As the kids learn from the field trips or from our site they can fill in the last column.

The students in our project took what they learned in the field and kept learning about it in all of their classes. They wrote press releases to tell the newspapers what they did. The Miami Herald wrote a two page article with six pictures thanks to that press release. The students are also building a field guide for people who go visit West Lake Park. It will have information and pictures made by the sixth graders. There were lots of science lessons, but also math and language arts. The main thing, by learning all of this, the students could share what they learned with people in the community. That way more people will visit the park and learn to care about it.
