Summer Sanders

The first Olympics she competed in, in her swimming career were at Barcelona. At Barcelona she won a gold medal, a silver medal, and a bronze medal in three events. She won one medal in each event. She swam magnificently and won her medals in the two hundred meter butterfly, the two hundred meter, and the four hundred meter individual medleys. She also had the privilege of being the first woman since 1976 to participate in four individual events at an Olympic Game. After not participating in the 1988 Olympic team (missing the team by .27 of a second) she became determined to make the team next time. Her hard work and being determined paid off. In 1990 she swam faster than before. At the goodwill Games her time dropped 8.68 seconds from her current best time and she won three gold medals. At the 1991 World Championships she kept showing her improvement by winning the two hundred meter butterfly and had the fastest time in that event since 1987. Summer started her college swimming career at Stanford University in 1991.
