History

In the Olympics swimming was a sport for men in 1896. It was a sport for women in 1912. Swimming is when a person or an animal moves through the water using their arms and legs. Swimming is a popular sport. It's also a healthy exercise.

People of all ages from toddlers to senior citizeswim for fun. All over the world people swim in lakes, oceans, rivers, and in pools. Thousands of communities have one or more pools for people in their community to use. A lot of people have their own swimming pools.

In the 1900's swimming has become a competitive sport. many swimmers compete in swimming meets held by schools, colleges, and swimming clubs.

Swimming races have been the main event in the summer Olympic Games.

Many long distance swimmers have attempted achievements as swimming across the English Channel or swimming fron the southern coast of California to the Santa Catalina Island.
