Hoof Care |
If you want a healthy horse you should pay good attention to your horses feet. Hoofs should be cleaned daily and trimmed or reshod every four to six weeks. Using a hoof pick you should clean your horses hoofs before and after each ride. If you don't, you could have problems like sore feet. This could happen if they have been on rock or their shoes have been on for too long. If horses are in a stall that wasn't cleaned enough or kept in a muddy lot for too long, the feet may get a bad smell, this is sign that you could have trouble....Thrush. This is a condition that invades the frog of the horse's feet. This means the horse will not be in good physical condition. Foundering is another condition that can harm a horse's feet. Horses can founder because of too much grain, too much grass, or being worked too hard on hard ground. Symptoms of foundering are lameness, stiffness, settling back on their hind feet. Settling back means that they try to get their weight on their hind feet. If this condition is not treated it will eventually cripple the horse. We certainly hope this doesn't happen to your horse. Many cases of foundering if caught early enough can be corrected with proper veterinary care.
