Food |
You should always feed your horse every day. The trick is knowing what and how much to feed them. First lets talk about when to feed them. Horses should be fed at least twice a day. Once in the morning and again in the evening. If you plan to work your horse they should finish their food at least one hour before working. Now what to feed them. Horses have a small stomach and feeding grain should be done carefully. They should also have hay available to them. First lets talk about grain. Oats and Corn mixed together is a good idea. The Oats contain protein that horses need and the Corn has a lot of energy. There are many good commercial feeds on the market today. Many of these are specially made for working horses, pregnant mares, lactating mares, and colts. Now about the hay, it is also very important. Horses naturally eat grasses. We call grass and hay roughage. It is a very good source of calcium. They definitely need to eat hay or they will experience health problems. We feed our horses one pound of hay for every 100 pounds that they weigh. For example, our Arabian weighs 1200 pounds so in the winter when she doesn't have pasture we make sure we give her at least 12 pounds of hay everyday plus a helping of grain. Another very important thing that horses need is WATER. They need to have a clean supply of water available to them. We also put out a mineral block for our horses. Minerals are very important for horses. If you have concerns about what to feed your horse, your feed dealer or veterinarian can tell you what you need.
