CPR for Infants

• Rescue breathing.
  1. Keep the infant's head tilted back
  2. Seal your lips around the infants lips and nose
  3. Give two slow breaths until the chest slowly rises
  4. Check for a pulse
  5. Just keep listing
  6. If the pulse is present, but the infant is still not breathing give one slow breath every three seconds
  7. If the pulse is not present find the finger position on the center of the breast bone
  8. Compress chest five times
  9. Give one slow breath
  10. Repeat motor cycle for one minute and recheck pulse

  CPR for Children
  
  CPR stands for CardioPulmonary Recsusitation.
  If you are alone with a child and the child is not breathing, give rescue breathing for one minute before calling the emergancy number given to you by the child's parent or guardian.
  • Rescue breathing.
    1. Tilt the child's head back and pinch the nose shut. Not your nose.
    2. Give two slow breaths into the child's mouth until their chest gently rises.
    3. Check for the child's pulse.
    4. If the child's pulse is present, but the child is still not breathing then give one slow breath about every three seconds. Do this for about a minute or twenty breaths.
    5. Recheck the child's pulse and breathing.
    6. Continue rescue breathing as long as the child is not breathing and recheck pulse and breathing about every minute.
    
    
  • CPR = RESCUE BREATHING + CHEST COMPRESSIONS
    
    1. Find finger position on about the center of the breastbone or the sternum.
    2. Compress chest five (5) times.
    3. Give one (1) slow breath.
    4. Repeat cycles of five (5) compressions and one (1) breath for about a minute (about twelve (12) cycles).
    5. Call the local emergancy number if you have not already done so.
    6. Recheck pulse and breathing for about five (5) seconds.
    7. If there is no pulse then continue sets of five (5) compressions and one breath. Recheck pulse and breathing every few minutes.

  Infant Choking
  
  
  If an infant is choking ...
  1. Retilt infants head
  2. Give breaths again
  3. If air still won't go in ...
  4. Position infant face down on forearm
  5. Give 5 back blows with heel of hand between infant's shoulder blades
  6. Position infant faceup on forearm
  7. Give 5 chest thrusts on center of the breastbone
  8. Lift jaw and tongue and check for object
  9. If object is seen, take it out
  10. If no object is found, repeat steps

  Choking
  
  If a child is choking and cannot speak, cough or breathe ...
  1. Place thumb side of fist against middle of abdomen just above the navel. Grasp fist with other hand.
  2. Give quick upward thrusts.
  3. Repeat until object is coughed up or child becomes unconscious.
  
  If child becomes unconscious ...
  1. Retilt child's head.
  2. Give breaths again.
     

     If air still won't go in ...

  3. Place heel of one hand against middle of abdomen just above the navel.
  4. Give up to five (5) abdominal thrusts.
  5. Lift jaw and tongue and check for object. If seen, sweep it out with finger.
  6. Tilt head back and give breaths again.

  Repeat breaths, thrusts, and sweeps until breaths go in or child starts to breathe on own.

  Sudden Illness
  
  When a person becomes suddenly ill, he or she often looks and feels sick. Common signals include:
  • Feeling light-headed, dizzy, confused, or weak.
  • Changes in skin color (pale or flushed skin), sweating.
  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Diarrhea.
  
  
  Some sudden illnesses may also include:
  • Changes in consciousness
  • Seizure
  • Paralysis or inability to move
  • Slurred speech
  • Difficulty seeing
  • Severe headache
  • Breathing difficulty
  • Persistent pressure or pain.

  If a person becomes suddenly ill, don't second guess, call EMS!! 911

  Poison
  
  If you think the child has been poisoned, call your poison control center or local emergency number.

  Injuries
  TO CARE FOR BURNS ...
  1. Put out the fire.
  2. Use water to cool (not ice because ice can injure the tissue) the burned area.
  3. Cover with a clean dry dressing.
  4. Don't put ointments on the burn because it keeps the heat in.
  5. Do not pop a blister because a blister is the body's natural bandaid.
  
  INJURY TO BONES ...
  
  Signs and symptoms of a bone injury include:
  
  
  1. Limited movement;
  2. Swelling;
  3. Discoloration;
  4. Pain;
  5. Bone breaks through the skin.
  
  Treatment:
  
  
  1. Call 911;
  2. Keep the injured part from moving;
     • Make a splint from a towel, rolled up magazine or newspaper;
     • A sling can also be made from a towel;

Reset
