So Far From The Bamboo Grove
By Yoko Kawashima Watkins
Summary

The main characters are Little One, her mother, Ko her sister, Hideyo her brother, and her father. The father had to go away and Hideyo had to join the army during the war. Little One, Ko and their mother have to leave their house or else they will get killed. Therefore, they have to leave without their father and brother and go to Seoul.

They are on the train for half the way because new people are getting on. They get off the train and walk the rest of the way to Seoul. They get there but then they have to leave and go to Japan, their homeland. They arrived only to learn their grandparents are dead; their mother dies from lack of eating and sleeping later on. Little One and

Ko pass out papers to everyone with the names of their father and brother so they can be found. After awhile, Hideyo is in Seoul, sees the paper and finds his sisters.

The things I liked and learned from reading this book are that back then women didnít have as many rights as men . For example one part women were being killed just because they were women. Something that I found interesting was that in Japan 350 yens are one dollar in the United States. In this book the things I liked was that this author made you feel like you were there. At the end The mother died and I liked how the author surprised me at the end because Little One was sick so I thought she was going to die. The thing that I didnít like was that they kept on moving. It was kind of confusing. But over all it was a good book and I encourage you to read it.
