The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle
By Avi

Summary

The name of the book that I read is, The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. Also, the authorís name is Avi. This book was published in 1990.

Some of the major characters in, The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle are, Charlotte, Zachariah, Ewing, Captain Jaggery, Fisk, Holybrass, Ketch, and Grimes. The conflict in the story is, Captain Jaggery is a crazy man who has killed two people. The story begins with Charlotte getting on the Seahawk in Liverpool, England. After sometime had passed, crew members were warning Charlotte that she might be in great danger with Captain Jaggery. Then Captain Jaggery killed one crew members because he had a pistol in his trunk and tried to kill a crew member for being Charlotteís friend. Sometime later the Seahawk went through a hurricane. Just about everyone was injured. A couple days later the ship was nearing Providence, Rhode Island. That day Captain Jaggery practically flew overboard while the ship was rocking back and forth and he killed himself. Finally, when the ship had docked, Charlotte was with her family. But, when her father fead her journal he was very mad at what she had written and threw it in the burning fire. So, Charlotte ran away and the next day she borded the Seahawk and left for England again.

I learned about English people. In the 17th century, the people dress very formally, and the people like it when children speak and write properly. Another thing I learned about the English is people are middle or upper class citizens.

This book had many strengths and weaknesses. Other strengths include, when Charlotte left the ship and her family was there, it was very heart felt and touching. Also, she was very sneaky. When she found the newspaper and returned to England. Some weaknesses are when Charlotte leaves her family, itís very sad. Also, I thought that there were too many killings. It was quite violent.
