This story can be called adventures, though we read it as a literary example about Russian history. It begins rather unusually, describing a family of the Ukranian kazaks, the father and two sons, Andriy and Ostap, who had just returned from a seminaria where they studied to be priests but they will never be anyhow connected with church as their father believes that the only possible way of life for men is fighting. So they were going to a fight with the Polish invaders. But the youngest, Andriy, fell in love with a Polish girl and betrayed his family. What will the father do? How will he punish his own son? Well, it's not the only tragedy in the book, and it is worth reading. Besides, you will learn many interesting facts about the customs and traditions of kazaks at that time.
