Little to Annemarie's knowledge, stores owned by Jews slowly close down. The Nazis decide to put all Jews in concentration camps. Wait a minute! Annemarie's best friend Ellen Rosen and her family are Jews!
Ellen came to stay with Annemarie, and was told to pretend to be Lise, Annemariešs older sister who had been killed by the Nazis when planning an escape for the Jews with her fiancee, Peter. Meanwhile the rest of Ellen's family hides somewhere else.
One night Nazis come into their house and look for Ellen. They put on a phony act that Ellen is Annemariešs sister. The Nazis buy it.
It is no longer safe in the city so the Johansens and Ellen go to the country, but father stays in the city for his job.
The Nazi's soon invade the country too.
