Professor William Waterman Sherman has a fascination with balloons and intends to fly across the Pacific Ocean with them, but something goes wrong and his balloons are popped by a mysterious person, or thing!

He lands on the island of Krakatoa. There, he encounters strange and unusual things. He meets new people and learns their customs. They have very strange laws and celebrations. They come from all over the world and all have different jobs on the island.

He finds that the island is one growing diamond. This works out well because there are earthquakes and the diamonds do not budge at all. Neither do the houses on the island which are built from designs of all different cultures.

After he uncovers all of the hidden and sacred secrets of the island, he is forbidden to leave. Find out more of what happens to Professor William Waterman Sherman and his balloons in... The Twenty-One Balloons.
