Have you ever read a mystery book? Of course you have. But have you read a good mystery book? I assure you that Watcher in the Dark by Beverly Hastings is guaranteed to be a good mystery book.
Watcher in the Dark is about a baby-sitter that is left for the weekend to baby-sit a little 6 year-old whose name is Abby. On the first night that Mr. Peters (Abby's dad) is away, Erin (the babysitter) gets a phone call but when she picks up the receiver and answers nobody says anything. These calls continue throughout the days and nights. One day Annette (Abby's mom) calls. Erin thinks this is strange because since Mr. Peters' divorce with Annette (about three years before), Annette had never called to know about her daughter. Mr. Peters had told if ever Annette called never, never let Abby speak to her. Erin wondered Why? Even though Erin wasn't supposed to let Abby speak to Annette she did, and that night Abby had many nightmares and was screaming "Mommy, don't be mad at me!" (p. 51). That day when Erin went to leave Abby at preschool, Abby was fine, but when she went to get her she was not there!
