Erin is a girl who loves to hang out with her friends and tell scary ghost stories. She is the kind of girl that always wants to get her way. Erin has a younger brother, Cowbird, that she hates more than anything. Erin's whole summer is ruined when she finds out that she has to move to Milwaukee and stay in an apartment for the summer.

Once they arrive in Milwaukee they drive down the street where the apartment supposedly is to be. When they pull up to a big, beat up, and scary looking apartment they knew they wouldn't be able to survive the summer.

One day when Erin had nothing to do she decided to take her cat, Rufus, for a walk around the building. She bumped into Mr. Grady, the ruler of the halls. Erin started wandering more after her talk with Mr. Grady. Later, Erin saw a woman a little ways down the hall. She was tall and thin and her wrinkles on her face made her look old. Her name was Molly Panca.

Erin visited Molly almost everyday except when she was busy. Together, Molly and Erin tell scary ghost stories while Molly's porcelain dolls sit around watching. They had planned to go to a play together until something terrible happened. You'll have to read the book to find out what that terrible thing was.
