Karana lives on an island with her brother and her father the chief of the island. A couple of days later, white men come to the island. Then they asked the natives on the island if they could take some seals and leave right away. Instead of taking only a few of the seals, they took a lot and went on without asking anybody. They took at least nine dozen of them.

Also, instead of leaving like they were supposed to, they did something so terrible to the chief. It was so terrible that all the people on the island wanted to move from the island and live somewhere else.

When they moved on the boats, Karana sees somebody left on the island. That person looked important to her so she swam back to the island. Who is left on the island? When Karana swims back, what happens to her since the other people leave her and that person is left on the island. What will happen to them? How will they survive? Will anybody come back?
