Genre, Classics, and Resources

Genre is a word from the French which means "category". Genre is "a term used in literary criticism to designate the distinct types or categories into which literary works are grouped according to form or technique." (Dictionary of Literary Terms) Books that belong to the same genre have things in common. Mystery is a genre, for example; mystery books are stories that have a puzzle (usually involving a crime) you try to figure out. Biography is another genre; biographies tell the true facts about someone's life and personality.

A classic is "a book that has never finished saying what it has to say"(Italo Calvino) A book can be a classic because it was one of the first pieces of writing to try writing a story a certain way. It could also become a classic because the people of today can still learn about life, about people, and about the world from reading it, even though it was written a long time ago.
