 How would you like to be a dog living on a ranch tormented by a dumb cat, watch over the ranch when you don't get any credit, eat food that tastes like soap, and teach a dumb, scared, little mutt how to be a cowdog?

Hank the Cowdog, Head of Ranch Security has that life. He's badly mistreated, but is a little dumb. He tries to be tough and likes revenge. Drover is that dumb, scared, little mutt. He's only a pup and badly wants to be like Hank. Loper and Sally May are the owners of the ranch. Slim has a house near-by. Also there's Pete. Pete the rotten, stupid, dirty, low-down cat you've ever seen.

One day when Slim and Hank are driving, they find Buster and his gang of dog-thugs barking at a baby rac (raccoon). After they were chased away it was saved by Slim. They name him Eddy. Hank prefers "Mud" or "Plague". They bring him home and raise him. Hank isn't noticed much. The two are enemies until they meet face-to-face. At night, Eddy's "uncontrollable fits" of "Moonlight Madness". Hank get into TROUBLE watching over Eddy.
