"My heart is pounding. My stomach is doing major flip-flops. I feel everyone must know what I have in this bag. What if someone on the streetcar sees what I'm doing and turns me in? What if some German stops me, just to harass me, just to scare me, and looks into my bag?"(flyleaf)

What would it feel like if you're town was invaded by Nazis and you and your family were in danger? This happened to Lisa.

Lisa is a Jewish teenager living in Denmark. When the Nazis invade her town her brother joins an anti-Nazi movement and her father, a doctor, starts secretly treating resistance fighters. Lisa also joins the anti-Nazi movement. Many tragedies happen to her as she struggles to stay alive. You see the tragic things that the war made people do including escaping their birth country.

I loved the book even though it was sad and complicated. Sometimes I was shocked with the information and it left me somewhat devastated but taught me a lot. It is full of excitement, drama and fictional history. If you like Holocaust history that is somewhat fictional this is a book for you. Carol Matas is a wonderful author. She also wrote After the Warand Daniel's Story.
