WOODY WOODWINDS

The Super SAXOPHONE

The saxophone is one of the most common woodwind instruments. In the woodwind family it is one of the loudest instruments, as well as one of the biggest. The saxophone is also one of the few woodwinds that is a common jazz instrument. Out of all the woodwinds, the saxophone is one of the easiest to learn to play. The saxophone's sound is the sound of a definite woodwind, but with a jazz air that kind of resembles a trumpet's sound. The saxophone's reed is like the clarinet's. The saxophone got it's name from its inventor whose last name was Sax. He was Belgian, and he invented the saxophone in the 1800's.

There is also more than one type of saxophone. There is the SOPRANO SAXOPHONE, which is capable of playing the higher range of notes, the ALTO SAXOPHONE, which is the sax most commonly used for starting out on this instrument, the TENOR SAXOPHONE, which is able to play generally lower notes, and the BARITONE SAXOPHONE which is able to play the lower range of notes. Each of the main types of saxophones can play an average of two and a half octaves. The tenor and baritone saxophone resemble the shape of the bass clarinet, with a curved end. The soprano sax, on the other hand, has a straight body, resembling the clarinet.
