Woody Woodwinds

By: Hannah, Sasha, Stephanie, and Priya

This Website will tell you about a wonderful section of the orchestra, the Woodwinds. These are some of the instruments in the woodwind family. They include the clarinet, the saxophone, the flute, the oboe, the piccolo, and surprisingly enough, the organ.

Before we go into the details, why don't we start with the basics?! All woodwinds make sound by moving air. They are called "woodwind" because they were first made of wood, and they made sounds by moving air.

The woodwinds have three types of mouthpieces. Clarinets and saxophones have one reed attached to the lower side of the mouthpiece. Oboes have double reeds where the player's lips squeeze in between. The air makes the side of the instrument vibrate. The flute has a mouth hole. The player tilts the blowing air that directs a thin stream of air against the edge of the mouth hole, which makes the flowing air in the flute vibrate.
